What is OPC UA?

The OPC Unified Architecture (UA) is a platform independent service-oriented architecture.

The OPC UA information modeling framework is extended by the MTConnect Institute and many other organizations. MTConnect's industry standard information model fits between vendor information models and the OPC UA base (information access, transport, discovery, security, robustness)

UMATI and VDW/OPC-UA Companion Specification for Machine Tools

The MTConnect/OPC-UA Companion Specification may compete in part or in whole with the forthcoming VDW/OPC-UA Companion Specification for Machine Tools, the flagship standard of the Universal Machine Tool Interface (UMATI) brand.

As of April 2020, the VDW/OPC-UA Companion Specification for Machine Tools is a draft Release Candidate not available for public review or access. Members of the OPC Foundation may join the working group to access and contribute to the Release Candidate. When a public release is available, the MTConnect Institute will seek to harmonize and provide translation tools with the latest revisions of MTConnect (ANSI/MTCV.V-YYYY) and the MTConnect/OPC-UA Companion Specification (OPC XXXXX-X - MTConnect Part 1: Device Model) available at that time.

See www.mtconnect.org/umati or www.industryarena.com/umati for more information on UMATI.
